Watercolor of a church or mission and adjacent garden, in Southern California (possibly Mission San Diego or structure in Balboa Park there), 11" by 15" (15 1/2" by 19 1/2" framed), signed clearly at lower left "J. B. Comparet 1916", and apparently signed/dated again at lower right, though somewhat indecipherably. The artist, JOHN LOUIS BERTRANT COMPARET (1848-1929) was born in South Bend, Indiana in the mid nineteenth century. By the year 1880 he was in Denver, and by 1894, in San Diego. Comparet was the older brother of better-known 19th century artist Alexis Comparet. This work is in generally very good condition. The piece is not properly matted or framed. The existing mat is foxed and soiled, but that should not distract the prospective purchaser, as it should be immediately discarded. **PARALLEL DIAGONAL STREAKS IN RED FLOWERS AT RIGHT IS A REFLECTION, not a scratch** An historic little work of Southern California.
