This is an impressively large oil on canvas in a simple strip wood frame, approximately 59" by 51", the subject a mysterious one, at once Expressionist, Surrealist, dreamlike, and difficult to describe----essentially, abstract, biomorphic forms, all painted in muted earthy colors, brown the dominant color of the painting. The painting is signed at lower right corner "Peinado", and is dated there 1966. On the reverse side, in a protective sleeve, is the original printed label from the prestigious international Venice Biennale exhibition of 1966, and the printed identification number "932", as well as what appears to be an official Italian government tax stamp. The painting is signed again on the reverse of the canvas, along with "No. 1/Bienal Venecia/Inter(nacional)?". A recent email to the archival curatorial staff at the Biennale resulted in a confirmation that this painting did indeed appear there in the year 1966, the title given as "Ritratto" ("Portrait"). The Venice Biennale was then, and remains, an important, highly prestigious venue for international introduction of new artists and exposure of already established artists.

Peinado, sometimes confused with Spanish painter Joaquin Peinado (1898-1975), remains an active painter in Spain. Born in Malaga in 1941, he emigrated to Brazil with his parents in 1952. He returned to his native Spain in 1963 and obviously his art career grew at a dramatic pace, considering that he was selected to show at Venice only a few years later. Over the years, Peinado exhibited at many expositions, in Spain, other European countries, Brazil, South Africa, and the United States (including the New York World's Fair of 1965 and the Museum of Modern Art) .

Today, a website devoted to the artist shows his latest work, much of it quite different from the earlier works, incorporating figures and familiar objects. Online videos show the painter and his works, and his explanations of their complex messages. Peinado won the Andalusia Arts Award in 1992, and the Public Awards in Sevilla in 2006. A number of paintings have appeared at Spanish auction houses.

The painting was found in Maine. At fifty years old, it has acquired some condition issues; I note an old repair at center, and there is unstable craquelure at top, and at right edge, leading to some paint losses, as shown in the images. The canvas has a roll and is not flat, and at center there is show-through of the cross-shaped stretcher bars.

Due to the size and consequent shipping issues, currently the work remains on the East Coast, stored at the home of my relatives in Fairfield County (Stamford) Connecticut, about 45 miles from New York City. It is available for viewing there by appointment. Considering the dimensions, the ideal buyer would be a local or northeast US buyer who could pick it up. Shipping would be possible but due to the size it could be costly. Shipping considerations and options can be discussed.

See, below, the impressive exhibition history of the artist.
