Oil on rough weave canvas scene of figures in a hazy landscape, 15" by 30" (20" by 35" framed), signed at lower right by English-born artist who later came to be more closely associated with Ireland, ANTHONY "TONY" KLITZ (1917-2000). This work, dating to 1975 as we see from a reverse copyright stamp of the artist, is rather typical of the artist's style. He used generally a soft impressionist style with generally restrained colors, along with much neutral space, punctuated by small bursts of intense color. The very recognizable style of this prolific artist won him many admirers. His paintings of London, and later Dublin, capture beautifully the essence of both cities. Klitz was born at Southport and was educated at the Cheltenham Art College in the late 1930's. He had architectural training, which is often visible in the paintings. During the prosperity of the early 2000's, Klitz oils brought consistently high numbers at auctions, often above $3,000. They have backed down from those levels, providing an excellent opportunity. This work is in excellent condition. I note a slight smoky odor (up close only). See other examples online of Klitz's unique style.
