Pencil signed lithograph of a street scene in Portugal, including balconies and numerous figures walking the cobblestone streets, numbered 98/100 at lower left margin, and signed at lower right by the noted Portuguese artist FRANCIS SMITH (1881-1961). Smith was born in Lisbon, moved to Paris while young, and became a French citizen in 1911. His whimsical, naive style paintings largely focusing on scenes of daily life in Portugal, especially Lisbon, were popular with museums and the art buying public, and they remain so. Works have auctioned over $60,000. He does not appear to have produced many lithographs. This example measures 21" by 16 3/4" in its narrow strip frame. It is clear with the exception of an old water stain and a few foxing spots at far lower left center, all of which could be easily matted out. There is a circa late 1950's Paris framer's label on the backing.
