Oil on masonite panel painting of the famous old historic St. Mary's in the Mountains church in the mining town of Virginia City, Nevada, 30" by 24" (39" by 33" framed), signed at lower right and dated 52. The church was first erected in 1868 and was rebuilt in 1876 after a fire. Today it is a landmark in the small town, which attracts many tourists to its picturesque streets. Shattuck was born in North Dakota and educated at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the Pennsylvania Academy. He moved from New York City to Laguna Beach in 1929, and during the 1930's was an art director for MGM, while also teaching at the Chouinard School in Los Angeles. Today Shattuck is listed in the Hughes Dictionary of California Artists. Works include nudes, interiors and landscapes of the west. The painting is in excellent condition. The frame has a crack at lower right. This painting was owned by Walter and Richard Lang, well known directors in Hollywood. There is a typed label of the period with the title and original price given.
