Oil on canvas painting, 18" by 24" (22" by 28" framed), signed at lower right by the well-known late California artist VIOLET K. PARKHURST (1921-2008). Parkhurst, born in Vermont, spent most of her life in Southern California, becoming widely known for her seascape and coastal scenes. She is best known for them, but still life, animals, and mountain landscapes are also found within her body of work. For many years her gallery was to be found in San Pedro, California, near the Los Angeles Harbor, and even today after her death, a web site protects her legacy. Parkhurst had a very interesting life, meeting the famous, who purchased her paintings; many photos of her with presidents and actors are to be found on her website. Clark Gable is reputed to have been someone she dated (see photo online of a young Violet with him). Giclee reproductions and other reproductions of her original paintings have further spread her fame. This painting bears a relatively early date on the reverse (March 11, 1973). Also written nearby is "A demo painting/Anaheim Convention Center". The artist's "Reproduction Rights Reserved" stamp appears twice as well. On the stretcher the artist wrote "To Mike, Always, Violet Parkhurst". The work has light soiling consistent with its age and there is a light 4" diagonal scuff/scratch from above the signature extending through it. The frame is very inexpensive looking and certainly not complementary. I would suggest discarding it (which might also save a few dollars on shipping).
