Old Counsellor cigar box, altered by hand, painted black, fitted with red felt interior compartments to hold jewelry, the lid carved and painted in a Deco design. The box measures 8 3/4" by 6 1/4" by 2 3/4". On the bottom one can see under the paint the original incised declarations of authenticity of the cigars, including notary public seal from Ulster County, New York, and other information that is difficult to decipher. There is a small locking mechanism and four platform feet have been added. This is an unusual item that should appeal to anyone looking for a jewelry box that is quirky or different. The lid is carved with skill and heavy lacquer was applied over the red, gold, green, black and yellow paints.
