Oil on canvas, unframed, 11 3/4" by 15 3/4", the subject Jewish men apparently in celebration with the Torah held high. This celebration is apparently known as Simchat Torah. The artist is ADOLF ADLER (1917-1996), a Romanian-born artist known for his genre, landscape and Holocaust-theme works celebrating Jewish life. Born in northern Transylvania, Adler was in a forced labor camp in the Ukraine, then imprisoned by the Russians. After the war, having lost much of his family in Auschwitz, he rebuilt his life around art, receiving increasing recognition. Adler emigrated to Israel in 1963. A 1984 retrospective of his works was held in Rishon Le Zion, and Adler's works were exhibited in Yad Vashem, the museum recognizing art of Jewish artists who were involved in the Holocaust. This painting could use a light cleaning and varnish, otherwise it is in excellent condition.
