Watercolor and ink drawing of a plump Victorian era gentleman in waistcoat, ("Mr Dick"), 7 3/4" by 5 3/4" inside the mat, 13" by 11" framed, signed at center left "Kyd". This is a work of the noted illustrator JOSEPH CLAYTON CLARKE, who went by the pseudonym "Kyd". Clarke became known for his drawings of Dickens characters (rarely did he illustrate scenes from the novels). His first drawings appeared in 1887 and through the 1890's many were published. Even towards the end of his life, Clarke was producing, evidently prolifically, these drawings, for the London book trade. Today they appear at auction, and are included in such collections as the British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum. This example appears to be in very good condition.
