Oil on masonite still life painting, 24" by 18" (33" by 26" framed), signed at lower left by California artist CLARETTA ELLIS WHITE (c. 1915-2002). This is a briskly painted work by an artist who was quite active in the Southern California art scene at mid century. An unusually detailed and complete website, evidently created by relatives, gives a complete history of her active life. The artist was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma into a cultured family. She grew up in Tulsa and went on to work as a singer and dancer in the Midwest, finding time along the way to take art lessons at Tulsa University and the Kansas City Conservatory of Art. White moved to Southern California on a Hollywood contract, working ultimately with many of the big Hollywood studios, and appearing in movies. After her 1937 marriage, she raised a family and continued to hone her art skills, studying with Leon Frank, Nicolai Fechin, and Sergei Bongart. After the war she was exhibiting actively in local galleries and shows, to considerable acclaim. Works on the website are offered to about the $3,000 area. This painting, which dates to about the 1970's, is in excellent condition. The frame has a little wear at right and will benefit from a little touch up at inner upper right corner.
