Watercolor painting of wooden early 20th century houses in an obviously foreign town in the Caribbean or Latin America, 14 1/2" by 20" (21 1/2" by 27" framed, no glass), signed in pencil at lower left corner "G. C. Barnard '48". Some internet digging and a small listing in the Davenport's artist dictionary has helped to determine that this is a work by Rhode Island artist GLADYS IRENE CARGILL BARNARD (1896-1965). The Davenport's small listing mentions "Panama" as subject matter, and that could certainly fit in with this scene. Also, I acquired this in Newport, Rhode Island, and the artist was born and is interred in that state. The watercolor is in excellent fresh condition with no foxing (the glass had protected it, before breaking on the shipping to the West Coast). It is hinged to a board but not laid on it.
