Watercolor on paper painting of the classic English countryside hunt, including red-coated formally dressed riders on horseback and the pack of hounds in advance, signed at lower left by the noted artist who specialized in such scenes, HENRY MURRAY. Murray's biography is limited at best, but he was obviously a skilled observer of the hunt culture of the second half of the nineteenth century. This work measures 11 1/2" by 17 1/2" inside the mat, and 19" by 25" framed (there is no glass). There is an old framer's label on the reverse side from Toronto, Canada. The piece came out of an estate in Maine. The paper and mat has browned evenly over the decades, and colors are lightened somewhat by sun exposure. There seems to be a very light creased area at lower left visible only when viewed very close up. A classic work for the classic traditional interior.
