Oil on canvasboard painting of a clipper ship in full sail outside a harbor, flying the French flag, 18" by 24" (21" by 27" framed), signed at lower right by the noted American artist WENDELL F. COLLUM (born 1896). Collum is most closely associated with Cape Cod (a 1940 census shows him living then at Orleans, MA), and census information shows him living in Haverhill, MA as a boy. His paintings of marine scenes and coastal landscape are distributed around New England. This example was purchased in Maine. The painting has some yellowed varnish and there are some nail holes at top and right edges, likely pre-dating the framing; perhaps at one point the canvasboard was nailed to another surface. Overall this is a nicely worked painting of a clipper ship.
