Old painting, 8 1/4" by 6 3/4" (16 1/2" by 15" framed), circa 1870, unsigned, the subject a young girl with blonde hair and intense blue eyes standing in a courtyard or patio area in front of a dwelling, a curious cat peering from the entrance seen at left. The girl is dressed in traditional picturesque clothing of the time. Someone in the past affixed to the bottom of the frame a placard identifying the artist as Ludwig Knaus (1829-1910), a well-known German painter of the second half of the century whose works bring substantial sums at auction, but this is apparently not a work by that artist. I entertain the possibility that the art could be from Switzerland or Austria. In any event, it is a charming little oil, very old, and ready for display. I believe the work had some restoration at very top and very bottom edges in the distant past. A charming nineteenth century genre work.
