By listed artist PETER J. L. MARS (1874-1949) of Louisiana, this is an impressionist work on board, 18" by 12 1/2", 23" by 17" framed, signed at lower right and with notation there "NOLA" (for New Orleans, Louisiana), and titled in red chalk on reverse, "Bayou Sauvage in the Fall on the Old Spanish Trails". The artist's works are very rarely encountered. The swamps and bayous of southern Louisiana are a favorite subject of the artist. This painting probably dates to the 1920's. It could be brightened considerably with a cleaning as decades of grime have dulled the colors, which I believe would "pop". Otherwise condition is excellent. The original old frame has a loss in the inner gold portion at right, but it's not immediately apparent when viewing this. A rare opportunity to acquire a rare work of the Old South.
