Meta Pluckebaum (1876-1945, date of death sometimes given as 1954) was a German artist and illustrator, best remembered today for her sensitive fine drypoint etchings of cats, as well as dogs and other animals. A children's book illustrator, the large body of prints, as well as original drawings and paintings are known by her hand. Works appear frequently at auction. Pluckebaum was born in Dortmund, Germany in 1876, and studied with the artist Hermann Pohle, as well as with her own husband Karl. This example of her graphic work is in very good condition, with a minimum of paper oxidation (measurements 11" by 14" inside the mat, 16 3/4" by 19 3/4" in silvery frame). The artist signed it in pencil in lower right margin (versions with PRINTED signatures are out there and can trap the unwary). I have handled several prints by the artist in the past. The subject matter is appealing and universally popular.
