Often confused with artist Lawrence NELSON Wilbur (both auction records and biography almost hopelessly intermingled), this is an oil on canvas impressionist still life painting by the illustrator, Lawrence Wilbur. This listed artist was active in the New York City and Northern New Jersey area at mid century as an illustrator, landscapist, and portraitist. He signed typically with the oblique line below his name, as is seen here. This work seems to be outside his usual subject matter. Judging from the canvas, it was created late in his life. Measurements are 24" by 20", and 27" by 23" in modern day framing. Found in West Palm Beach, the frame loosened up in shipping to California, so all four corners are a bit askew (see the photo of lower right near the signature). I believe the frame can be tightened up again. There is a small dimple at left center (very minor) in the field but otherwise the painting is clean and fine.
