Pencil with white highlight drawing on brown paper, 9 1/2" by 15 3/4" (17" by 23" framed), the subject a number of different types of boats along a dramatic coast, possibly Whitby, England, circa 1860, signed at extreme lower left corner in pencil "Fowler". The drawing, which is laid on a thin board, features various types of sailing craft, and, in the foreground, a rowboat. A castle like structure crowns the prominent hill. Eastern England's coastal Whitby, often depicted in artworks, has a similar feature. In any event, that would appear to rule out American origin, unless it be by an American artist copying an English print or drawing. Framed in dark stained oak frame, which has a little wear, most notably at right center edge where there is a loss showing as a light area. Condition of the drawing itself appears to be above average for a drawing over 150 years old. Allow for reflections in the glass on the photo of the item as framed.
