This is a gouache on paper work of a young lady, 21 1/2" by 17", 26" by 20 1/2" in metal framing, signed at upper left by California artist and art director JOHN OTTERSON (1905-1991). The handling of the face reminds of Picasso and his Cubism. Otterson had a long career and in the course of that career created many different styles of art. Born in Pennsylvania and educated at Yale, he is credited with some of the major murals in the Empire State Building in New York City. Between 1932 and 1942 he worked in Hollywood as art director for many well-known films, receiving eight Academy Award nominations in the process. After the war, Otterson worked at the Los Angeles Art Institute and at UCLA. His works appear occasionally at auction, where they have apparently become confused with works by the German artist Heinz Otterson. This is a strong modernist work with great presence and a true contemporary feeling. It is in excellent condition.
