Old circa late 19th century oil on canvas laid in more recent decades on a thin board, 21 1/2" by 35", (26 1/2" by 39 1/2" in simple wood mid 20th century frame), unsigned, the subject the classic river hemmed in by steep cliffs, a prominent small sail boat at center and hints of a few well into the distance providing a hint of the human presence in the peaceful landscape. The anonymous artist handled the luminosity very well, the tree's backlighting quite well understood and presented. I imagine this could well be by a listed artist but I have searched carefully and see no signature so offer this as a classic work of its type, bordering on folk art. There is a puckering/waviness at upper right and to a lesser degree at top left where the canvas and board have evidently separated a bit, and there is an old dark horizontal scratch at bottom, but this is all to be expected and adds to the charm of a work about 125 or so years old.
