Oil on pine wood panel painting of golden California poppies in a shallow bowl, 11 3/4" by 11 3/4", signed at lower right "M. E. Wakelee" and bearing title at lower left "California Sunshine". This is a work by listed California artist MARY E. LANE WAKELEE (1858-1938). Wakelee was one of many artists who from the late 19th century through about 1940 painted California's state flower, the poppy which carpeted open areas in the spring months. Considering the title, she might have been working for the state's tourism board. The painting has survived in very good condition. It would look really nice in a MIssion or Southwest themed interior. ,
