Small but very nicely done oil on canvasboard scene of a small sailing craft and structure at a coastal dock, feathery trees occupying the body of land in the distance, 9 7/8" by 9", unframed, signed at lower right by listed American artist ROBERT BANKS FLINTOFT (1866-1946). The painting has a lovely light palette, with dispersed light and a silvery gray tone prevailing. Flintoft was born in Nottingham, England in Victorian times, studied in Munich, and immigrated to the United States around 1920, where he received further art training. Eventually he settled in Westchester County, near New York City. On the reverse is written in ink "Dec. 28 -'41", so this would have been executed near the end of his life. Interestingly, the Hughes dictionary of California artists mentions that Flintoft evidently painted in California, as a landscape of Palos Verde Hills in Southern California is known. The light and subject of the present work suggests a California setting but that would likely be difficult to ascertain. A light cleaning and varnish would be desirable but not mandatory; it would likely remove the yellowish tones where they are present (old yellowed varnish). A silvery gray frame would complement the colors.
