Truly old nineteenth century oil painting, 29" by 24 3/4" (32" by 27 3/4" framed), apparently unsigned, the subject probably Mary Magdalene, an extensive landscape visible at distant right. The painting's precise age is difficult to pinpoint, but mid 19th century would be close to the mark. No doubt it is a copy after an original Italian master work of the 16th century. The canvas as seen on the front is more coarse in appearance than the fine weave canvas seen on the reverse, leading me to think this might be relined. As seen there is overall yellowed varnish, and a number of other flaws that come with age...buckling of the generally uneven canvas (especially at lower left), some old punctures amateurishly repaired with tape on the reverse, small losses and abrasions, and so forth.
