Large original lithograph print of an attractive young woman in large exotic fashionable hat, staring fetchingly at the viewer, the setting a race track (think Raoul Dufy), by the important and increasingly popular French contemporary artist JEAN-PIERRE CASSIGNEUL (1935-). The work measures 12 1/4" by 27" and 22 1/4" by 37" in tasteful quality framing (reverse label of Samuel Stein Fine Arts, 620 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago). The work might be a plate from a book, as there are two vertical creases evenly spaced, and the print has no margins and is not numbered or pencil signed. It remains, however, very decorative and appealing, and is a genuine lithograph and not an offset reproduction of any kind. Cassigneul was born in Paris before the war, and was exhibiting solo there by age 17. Between 1955 and 1960 he worked in the studio of Roger Chapelain-Midy. From that point on, his career continued a steady ascent, his popularity increasing to the point where today his oils regularly bring over $100,000 at auction, one having reached nearly $900,000 in 2013. In 1954 Cassigneul met dealer Kiyoshi Tamenaga, who played a large part in the promotion of the artist's work in Japan, where he remains hugely popular, after countless exhibitions of his work in large Japanese cities. By 1968, gallerist Wally Findlay was handling his works in America. It is said of Cassigneul that his work is reminiscent of Les Nabis---artists such as Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, and clearly there is a lot of Kees Van Dongen in Cassigneul's sexy, sophisticated young women. The print is in excellent condition. Note the inner fillet and recessed framing, with wide cream linen mat. Allow for a few reflections in the glass. Ready to hang on the wall.
