The Surrealist images created by Rene Magritte (1898-1967) are among the most instantly recognizable artworks of the twentieth century, extremely popular with the general public. Original art auctions well into the hundreds of thousands and above, attesting to the fame of the artist. This is Magritte's 1965 color lithograph "L'Idole", or "The Idol", (apparently also sometimes known as "Rock Bird"), printed by Henri Deschamps, and pencil signed at lower right by the estate or by his wife. There are no edition numbers at left. Measurements are 17" by 19 3/4" inside the linen mat (not opened up to further examine). The piece measures 24" by 28" in its quality, heavy framing. Examples similar to this sold at the height of the 2007 art market in the neighborhood of $4,000. Condition appears really excellent, with good fresh color and no foxing. Allow for a number of reflections (lightish vertical streak in bird is only a reflection).
