Antique lockable wood box, 11 1/2" by 10" by 3", lined with purple velvet, a brass plate inset into the wood reading "A. Hamill Esq. Dublin". The box was likely used to store small personal items or jewelry in circa 1870's Ireland. The wood, when viewed in direct sunlight, has a rich patina, the "flame" aspect leading me to think it is flame mahogany. The box shows evidence of fine craftsmanship, including a fine inset of wood that resembles an ultra-thin dovetail of sorts. Could be used to hold jewelry or other valuables. A google search for A. Hamill in Dublin shows a possible 1871 periodical mentioning the name, and that would likely be the approximate period to which this box would date.
