Pencil on paper study of a man, signed at lower left with initials M.A.K., mid 19th century, by the noted Dutch landscapist and member of the important artistic Koekkoek family, MARINUS ADRIANUS KOEKKOEK (1807-1870). He was the son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and brother of Barend Cornelis and Hermanus Koekkoek. This particular work was likely a sketch made by the artist as he worked out a particular artistic situation for a painting. It is in reasonably good condition considering it is about 150 years old. The paper is affixed only at the top edge to another sheet of paper, so, it is NOT laid down (permanently glued). Koekkoek's oils go well into the thousands of dollars at auctions in Europe and his works hang at major museums such as the Rijksmuseum.
