This is a classic 1980's example of the work of California-based Neo-Romantic, surrealist painter ROBERT WATSON (1923-2004), measuring 18" by 14" (oil on canvas, and 27" by 22" framed). The work is signed at lower right and dated there 1981, and is titled on the reverse "Anticipation". Watson, born near San Francisco, studied in New York and in Wisconsin with Frederic Taubes, before his first one-man exhibition at Gump's department store in San Francisco in 1948. Soon he was exhibiting around the country, in Europe, and even Brazil and Jerusalem. Celebrity collectors drew further attention to his strangely lonely and mystery-ridden work, and today the paintings sell with regularity at live auctions. This example with its cold blues, whites and grays is typical of the 1980's works. It is in excellent condition; the frame has a little wear. See a website dedicated to the artist and his very popular work.
