Something of a mystery piece, this unsigned mixed media drawing in gouache, watercolor, pencil and ink rather resembles the stage design work of the noted artist Eugene Berman (1899-1972). Measuring 14" by 19 1/2", unframed, the drawing is on paper laid down on another sheet of paper. It has traveled without framing so has become dog eared and acquired a number of other flaws including a heavy crease at upper left and other issues within the imagery. The drawing of the figures at center particularly resembles Berman's dreamy, surrealistic work. Found locally in Los Angeles, where the artist spent many years after 1938, it might well be by him. Berman was born in Russia and came to California via Paris (where he knew many important artists) and New York. Unfortunately without a signature it is difficult to truly state that this is Berman's work, but it certainly resembles it.
