Watercolor and ink drawing of a stone house adjacent to a dirt road on which a horse is pulling a buggy, a split rail fence, trees and a cow completing this bucolic scene of times gone by, the art in an oval, vignette style, the painted area 5" by 6 1/2", 13 1/2" by 15" in modern framing, possibly signed at lower left but definitely dated there either 32 or 34. This is a very, very early drawing. I purchased it in Maine, where a dealer had affixed a label attributing it to Pennsylvania artist Russell Smith (1812-1896). I am going to offer it simply as a very old charming American drawing, rare compared to European drawings of its age. Condition is excellent especially considering that it is nearly 200 years old; there are two foxing spots and the paper is puckered at top left where it doesn't lay smoothly underneath the modern olive green inner mat. There are no other clues as to authorship (have opened the backing). Colors are amazingly fresh.
