ORIGINAL work, not a print as is commonly seen, 19" by 24" as framed, signed at lower right in white by the noted Croatian or Yugoslavian naive folk painter JOVAN OBICAN (1918-1986). This is a typical painting by the artist, featuring three traditionally dressed male figures, each holding a bird of some kind. The artist was born in Cannes, France to Yugoslavian parents, and at mid century had become quite an international sensation, selling to tourists and the famous alike, from a studio in Dubrovnik. A prolific artist, his work deals with themes such as tradition, folklore, legend, and Old World customs, in a whimsical naive sometimes child-like style. Birds in his compositions are thought to have specific meanings. The painting is in a thinned acrylic on paper or board, and it and the frame are in ready to hang condition. Allow for reflections in some images.
