Oil on canvasboard painting titled on backing paper "LAVISH FALL PALETTE/LONGS PEAK", signed at lower right by artist RUTH ERWIN (1904-1994). The work, featuring flaming aspen in the Colorado high country in high autumn, a view to monumental Longs Peak in the distance, measures 10" by 8" (18 1/2" by 16" framed). I've gathered a few nuggets of information on the artist through the net. One person wrote what she found on a label attached to the back of an Erwin painting she owned: "....the "paint bug' hit me in the third grade grammar school. With a new box of water colors on my desk, the teacher offered three freshly picked violets and said, " Paint these" and a new world opened for me. My family was more or less artistic, but i never received formal art training. While still in grammar school, mother, who had some instruction in oil painting, gave me my first set of oils and endeavored to provide the fundamentals. Since there was no art teacher in our little home town in Missouri, copying good reproductions of art seemed the only alternative. from this I learned much about drawing, composition and color. I also read and studied all art books the public library could provide. The real joy came, however, when I learned to sketch and paint nature. Copying from other artists was no longer interesting. Trying to capture the beauty that Mother nature so lavishly, and often so fleetingly, spreads before us, is the great challenge. I am a former member of the Denver Art Club and the Colorado Springs Art Guild and have exhibited in various art shows and galleries in lowa and Colorado. It later years other duties prevented me from joining the art club activities but I have continued to paint. Many of my paintings now hang in homes throughout the U.S. ruth erwin 611 N. Ceder Street Colorado Springs This information is on a card on the back of one of her paintings from 1971." An apparent relative was seeking her paintings online in 2010 but I was unable to contact him at the old email address given. He did give the birth date/death date as 1904-1994. This work is ready to hang on the wall.
