(ONE OF TWO BY MERRIAM IN MY SHOP) Large oil on canvas, 25" by 30" (29 1/2" by 35" framed), in its vintage original frame, the subject enormous trunks of the great trees of one of California's famous redwood or sequoia groves, signed at lower left in red by the talented California painter JAMES MERRIAM (1880-1951). This work is very typical of the artist, with rich color and a heavily impastoed, impressionistic style. Merriam was born in Canada and was studying in Detroit, before arriving in Southern California. He traveled the Southwest and California, painting the deserts, the missions, redwood forests, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and Yosemite. As he was said to have abused alcohol later in life, his work can be uneven, and this unevenness has hurt his auction footprint. The artist's better works are highly undervalued by the present market. The painting could use a light cleaning but it is free of the craquelure often found in paintings by this artist. .
