Oil on canvas painting, 30" by 24" (35" by 29" in wood frame with gilt applied), the subject a most appealing seated little girl playing dress up in floppy oversized hat and coat. The work is by the noted American artist RUTH A. ANDERSON (1891-1957). Anderson was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and was educated in West Chester. By 1905 she was a student at the Pennsylvania Academy. Among her teachers were luminaries such as Cecilia Beaux, William Merritt Chase, Hugh Breckenridge, Thomas Anshutz, J. Alden Weir, and Emil Carlsen. Anderson moved to Boston and became known for her impressionist paintings of Gloucester, and also New York's financial district. After 1950 she was blind. Today, several of the Gloucester beach paintings by the artist have exceeded $50,000 at auction. This example is in very good condition, with a slight rumpling of the canvas and uneven varnish. The frame is very complementary.
