Oil on canvasboard Texas bluebonnet landscape, 8" by 10" (11 3/4" by 14" in mid century white frame with gold piping), signed at lower left "Belle Austin". This is a pleasing little work by MARTHA ELIZABETH "BELLE" AUSTIN (1880-1980). The scene with the classic Texas flowers that carpet the landscape in spring is familiar to any Texan. Belle Austin was a direct descendant of the "Father of Texas", Stephen F. Austin. Born in Smith County, she showed art talents as a child, and she was soon in New York for further study at the Art Students League under George Bridgman, and not long after that, in Pasadena, California for further training. Austin opened a Fort Worth studio and was promoted at mid century by a gallery there. She is listed in most dictionaries of Texas artists. The painting is in good condition, with an abraded area in the last part of her name, though the letters remain distinguishable.
