Aquatint on paper laid on board, 1924, "Le Village d'Herouville", 18 3/4 " by 24" inside the mat, and 26 1/4" by 31" framed, after an original by the famous and important French modern artist MAURICE de VLAMINCK (1876-1958), adopted for reproduction by equally noted artist Jacques Villon (11875-1963). Vlaminck is known as a Fauvist and later simply as an expressionist. At auctions, his works in oil bring from the low hundreds of thousands of dollars to the low millions. He was a formidable presence in the French art scene during the first half of the twentieth century, a contemporary of Derain, Matisse, Cezanne and other giants. A good friend of Jacques Villon, (the works of whom also can bring large sums at auction--including his own graphic works), the two collaborated on a number of similar aquatints, some of which are pencil signed in small editions. This example is not. The present mat was laid down in the style of the times decades ago. I opened this up and peeled the mat carefully away so as to be able to show the lower margin and so forth. See the net for much more on this major artist. This will be shipped without glass. The silvery surface wood frame has wear. .
