**One of two works by the artist in my shop**, this is an oil on board painting of what appear as houses, rendered in rich colors, and in a firmly modernist style. The painting measures 11 1/2" by 14 1/2" and 15" by 18 1/2" in early gold framing. The work is signed at lower left in the paint. On the reverse side is a fragment, in poor condition, of another painting the artist evidently executed. This artist, HALDANE DOUGLAS (1893-1980), was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was in Southern California by the early 1920's. According to the listing in Hughes' dictionary, Douglas wintered in Southern California and wintered in the Monterey area, where he studied with Armin Hansen. In the late 1920's he went to Paris, studying there with Andre Lhote. After returning to Los Angeles, he studied at Chouinard, and thereafter worked at Fox Film studios. Today he is not a household name, and his works appear to be scarce. One explanation might be provided by a precious old piece of paper affixed to the back of this painting. It is a transcription of a tale penned by one Harold Brown in 1966. In the note Brown describes how, in 1928 in Los Angeles, he stumbled upon a pile of paintings that had been discarded next to an incinerator for disposal. Brown selected some that were in decent condition and saved them from destruction. He had them restored, with the provision that he give one to the restorer for each one that he kept. These two paintings that I am offering are therefore likely to have been among the works saved by this man way back in 1928 Los Angeles. Over time the work has become dirty again, and the extreme upper left corner is missing a piece. The piece might have been stored in a damp place, accounting for the deterioration of the reverse side, but this does not seem to have affected the front side. This work and its companion piece are well worth restoring. There is considerable soiling, and the colors are dulled. With a cleaning and fresh varnish, the colors will really "pop". A fine modernist early work, saved from destruction by pure chance.
