Ceramic or porcelain, this is a shallow bowl that might have been used for serving foods, measuring at the extreme dimensions 12 3/4" by 8 3/4" by 2" deep. The central design of flowers is hand painted, as is, I think, the gold decoration. As a paintings specialist this is not within my expertise, so I hope to be describing it correctly. I have inspected the edges carefully and have not detected any chips, but there is a little wear in the design (gold ring around central image, and a few areas appearing as white, where the paint has worn away). I think this probably dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. There is no mark on the bottom, nor place of origin.
