Oil on canvas painting of classic red highland cattle in an extensive landscape, signed at lower left "Louis B. Hurt" and titled in pencil on stretcher "on the cliffs as Malaige" (Mallaig) (on the southwestern coast of Scotland near Skye). The work measures 20" by 30" on the stretchers and 28" by 38" in heavy attractive late 20th century framing. On the stretcher is written in chalk "April 4 - 30". The stretcher also is stamped with an old Christie's reference number (117 FD) from their extensive archives.
I acquired this work in 2001, in Dallas, Texas, without history. At the time Christie's London was not able to properly evaluate it from the photos I sent. I subsequently actually sent it to London and it was found to be not by the artist's hand, but in his style (a successful painter of such scenes, he evidently had a number of ready imitators). Christie's stickers remain on the reverse, as shown. Works by Hurt's hand sell regularly in the five figures and some even into six figures for exceptional examples. This is a very traditional, decorative painting in fine condition, ready for the wall, that awaits its new owner.
