**PAIR** Pastel on paper floral still life works, each 11" by 9" (15 3/4" by 13 3/4" in their original, dark walnut framing with gold inner fillet, bubbled wavy glass and original sawn wood back boards), one featuring a peach and wine glass with grapes on a table top, the other a pear and purple grapes arrayed on the ground. These are works by the American mid nineteenth century artist JOHN S. BOWER. Bower's drawings of fruit, often depicted sitting on the ground, are commonly seen in the northeastern states, as he is apparently most closely associated with Massachusetts. Biographical information on him seems elusive, but he did leave behind this rich legacy of still life in pastel. They are now highly collectable, appearing in Americana and folk art auctions. In the past I have owned several of the works, some signed and dated (generally in the 1860's), some neither signed nor dated, but highly recognizable by virtue of their style nonetheless. Most have been still life, though I once owned a winter landscape scene with tiny figures. These example are in excellent original condition, and are ready for the wall.
