Beautifully executed drawing in soft pencil, 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" sheet, 6 1/2" by 9 1/2" inside the rectangular border drawn by the artist, and 10 1/4" by 13 5/8" as framed, signed at lower right "Davis F. Schwartz", showing a copse of trees in a hilly landscape. This drawing, which reminds me of works by Ralph Holmes or Maynard Dixon, is nicely framed in a 1930's or 1940's frame, and ready for your wall. Schwartz (1879-1969) has a sizable listing in Hughes' "Artists in California 1786-1940". According to Hughes, Schwartz was born in Kentucky, and went on to study in the Midwest at Art Institute of Chicago and at schools in Ohio. Before moving to California in 1903, he worked as an illustrator for a newspaper in Cleveland. After 1915 he apparently abandoned commercial art. Thereafter he was most closely associated with San Francisco and Northern California. Today, one frequently encounters color prints of his watercolor work. You'll be happy with this little drawing if you have an Arts and Crafts or Mission/Bungalow type home. . SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PAINTINGS/PRINTS IN MY SHOP.
