OIl on board painting of a waterside building with dirt road, small boat, fences and tree, extensive water in the distance, signed at lower left twice, with a signature that appears to be "M G Johnston". The work appears to be of a coastal New England view, which leads me to believe that it would be by the hand of listed artist MARY GRANT JOHNSTON, but I have no other works with which to compare it. The painting measures 11" by 15" and the narrow silver frame is very complementary. Impressionist colors and deft handling show this to be by a talented artist indeed. Most likely the scene is of Maine or Massachusetts, Connecticut or Rhode Island. I think the work dates to no later than the 1940's, and possibly to the 1930's. It has a few light abrasions and light soiling/lack of varnish typical of works of this age, but you could well hang it right on the wall as it stands. A very pleasing, easy to live with painting.
