Large (20" by 24", 28 1/2" by 32 1/2" framed) watercolor on paper painting of a agriculture-related structure and machinery in a mountainous landscape, a figure at left, signed at lower right and inscribed there "Mexico 1940". The artist is WILLIAM T. McDERMITT (1884-1961), an Illinois-born artist most closely associated with California. According to the Hughes biography, McDermitt studied at Pratt and the Art Students League in New York, and in Europe. He taught in the 1920's at Washington State University in Pullman, then settled in Los Angeles in the early 1930's, studying further with Jack Wilkinson Smith. McDermitt was thereafter active as a painter and graphic artist in the Los Angeles area. This watercolor is in excellent condition.
