Oil on canvas painting, unframed, 15" by 23", the subject a traditional farmhouse in spring, surrounded by trees in pink and white blooms, the season's clouds billowing in the sky, and chickens pecking in the yard, apparently fed by a lone figure, at center. The painting is signed at lower left Louis Soonius. I am offering the painting on its decorative merits only as I do not believe it to be by the noted Dutch artist Louis Soonius (1883-1956). (Soonius was a Hague School painter known for his works depicting children and families on the summer beaches at Scheveningen. He painted in an impressionist style but this particular subject and technique seems not to fit into his body of work, and the canvas appears rather too recent to have been painted by an artist who died in 1956). The painting will require restoration, as there are two small punctures at upper left (and two old repaired punctures there) as well as a 2" tear in the canvas at upper right. There is also stretcher bar show-through, and light shows through old cracks in the thin canvas. The stretcher is American; there is evidence that the canvas was at one time nailed to a different stretcher. Overall this is a pleasant landscape worthy of restoration. The photos were taken in late afternoon light, causing a yellowish bias to the color. There is a little yellow in the clouds but otherwise the painting is not of that hue.
