This is an early oil painting of boats on San Francisco Bay, possibly in the vicinity of the Golden Gate, circa 1880, apparently unsigned. The work is on panel, 7" by 12 1/2" (10 3/4" by15 3/4 " framed). The first name that comes to mind when looking at an early oil of shipping on San Francisco Bay is William Alexander Coulter (1849-1936), but this painting does not appear to be in his style. Note the early old label on reverse of Currier and Winter, framers, 211 Kearny Street, (downtown San Francisco). There is faded old pencil writing there that could possibly help to reveal the identity of the artist if it could be deciphered. The painting is in good condition for its age. A light cleaning would be desirable but not mandatory.
