Watercolor and gouache painting of a harbor filled with sailing craft reflected in the calm water, (12 1/2" by 18 1/2", 21 1/2" by 26" as framed), signed at lower right JACOB VANDERBILT. Vanderbilt was an American artist evidently active in the New York area in the first part of the 20th century; at least one dated painting (1933) is known, but there is little biographical information available. He did work in oil and watercolor, and paintings of familiar and much-loved New York scenes predominate. One oil, of a snowy street, brought $3,500 at Christie's in 2007. Many of his gouache and watercolor works seem to have been executed on brownish paper.
