This is a rather typical work, mixed media, including use of paint and newspaper in a collage, signed at lower right by the noted French-American artist ROGER ETIENNE (1922-). Etienne was born in Paris, France but spent considerable amount of time in California. His works featuring clowns, big eyed children, and young, semi nude women are quite popular reminders of the 1960's and 1970's. This example measures 23 1/2" by 17 3/4" and is in excellent condition (all photos taken through the old style non-glare glass). Etienne worked in a variety of media, including oil, gouache, pastel, and charcoal, and quite often he incorporated pieces of French newspaper into the images . I read on the net that he may have worked at Pablo Picasso's workshop, and Marc Chagall may have commissioned him to do work for the Paris Opera House. Apparently he also worked as an actor and played a waiter in the movie "The Marathon Man".
