This is a really beautifully painted oil on a coarse, almost burlap canvas, the subject a sun-dappled yard of a house or other Spanish-California type structure populating old and established affluent communities such as Pasadena or Santa Barbara, tables and chairs in this little paradise awaiting the next social occasion. The work measures 16" by 20", UNFRAMED (the first image, with gold frame, is for display purposes only...again, the item will be sold UNFRAMED). The artist signed at lower right corner "O. Classen" (OTTO CLASSEN, 1868-1939). Classen was born in Dresden, Germany and was in Los Angeles by 1898. Hughes in his dictionary of California artists describes Classen's works as "rare". Classen painted portraits, landscapes and deserts. H exhibited at the Bay Women's Club (Santa Monica) in the year 1937. The handling of the light is masterful, as is the impressionism. A lovely work of vintage Californiana. The painting could use a professional cleaning as there is nicotine smell/staining, and there is a very small area I hesitate to call a tear....it is a thinned disturbed spot that is hidden in the design.
