This is a rather typical marine art work by the American-born artist WILLIAM MINSHALL BIRCHALL (1884-1941). The painting measures 14 1/2" by 10" and 25" by 19" in an old stained oak frame. It is signed at lower left (faintly) W. M. Birchall and titled nearby "A French Four Poster......" (indistinct). Birchall was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and emigrated to Hastings, England, where for a number of decades, well into the 20th century, he produced beautiful works in a traditional style, the subject tall ships, the later steam powered craft, and scenes of the English Channel and Thames River. Birchall worked almost entirely in watercolor. He was a prolific artist, and works are now distributed widely, with many auction sales noted in England and America. This painting is in generally good condition, with just a bit of blotchy toning/discoloration in sky at right. **All photos taken through non-glare glass, which tends to obscure detail.** SEE HUNDREDS OF PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS AND PRINTS NOW IN MY SHOP, including many other maritime works.
