Oil on canvas laid on masonite still life painting of pink grapes and a vase, 25" by 30" (31 1/2" by 36 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right by artist G. ANSON WHITE. Strangely, I can find only minimal references to an artist by this name, despite the amazingly skillful and sensitive rendering of the clusters of grapes. In such cases I am often left to wonder if perhaps the artist was actually someone well known who chose to sign the work with a pen name for one reason or another. There does appear to be a likely link with Massachusetts, as another painting thus signed showed up for auction there in recent years, and a person by that name is in the vital statistics records in that state. The painting probably dates to about 1915 or 1920 I am thinking. In more recent times the work has been laid on a masonite panel. Other than the most minor of surface scuffs, the painting is in excellent condition. The frame, of a later date than the painting (mid 20th century) has some light losses and wear.
